Chapter 21

Maia slowed the truck as they approached home. “You want me to drop you at your house to take your things inside?” she asked Yvette.

“No, I’m going to take them in the diner and count out the bags for Richie. He said don’t come home without three or four, and I’ve got five.”

Maia laughed. “Okay, then.”

Maia pulled up outside the diner and waited while Yvette looked through all the bags in the back seat and found those belonging to her. “Thank you for a wonderful day, Maia,” Yvette said sincerely.

“You’re welcome. And thank you for coming with me, for being my friend and just being you,” Maia said, pulling Yvette in for a hug. “I’m really, really happy you’re here.”

“Me, too,” Yvette answered.

“And, hey, it’s not my business, but if you do want Richie, help him along a little bit. He’s so devoted to you, just isn’t quite sure how to approach. He knows you’ve been through a lot, you know?” Maia said.

Yvette’s eyes rose to look through the plate glass windows of the diner and found Richie staring at her. “I’ve always wanted him. Just made some choices I thought would make him not want me.”

“Mates always forgive. Doesn’t matter what happened before; once your mate finds you or you find him. All that matters is from that point on,” Maia said.

Yvette nodded, then, all her bags in hand, Yvette hugged Maia again and got out of the truck. “See you later?” Yvette asked.

“Yep. I think we’re putting up the pool later. Riley, Lucas and Roman should have the site ready for it by now. So ya’ll come over when you close down,” Maia said.

“We will, see you then,” Yvette said, closing the door and watching Maia drive through the parking lot to turn around and go back through the main gate.

She heard the door behind her open and leaned over to pick up her bags, but a strong, male hand brushed hers gently away. “I’ve got ‘em,” Richie said.

“And do you see how many I’ve got?” Yvette asked.

Richie grinned at her and counted out the bags as he picked them up. “Five. I count five bags. Very good,” he said, lifting his arms to show her, two in one hand, three in the other.

Yvette’s smile fell and she looked at him sincerely. “Thank you, Richie. You just don’t know what all this means to me.”

“You’re welcome. And yeah, I kinda do, because all this means just as much to me.”

Yvette reached up putting her hand on his shoulder and stretched toward him. He leaned down to meet her halfway and she kissed his cheek. “I’ve never been so happy in all my life,” she whispered.

Richie turned his head quickly and pecked her lips. “Neither have I.”

Yvette let her hand fall from his shoulder and held her hands out. “I’ll take those home, then I’ll be right back to help.”

“No, I’ve got them. You go on in and tell everybody about your day. Mom’s been wondering about your day and hoping you were having fun, and Libby and I have a bet going.
